Motherly Advice: Living with Lymphedema & Lipedema

Every now and then, we can all use some motherly advice, especially when learning to cope with having Lymphedema and/or Lipedema. Being a mother with these conditions creates additional obstacles – physically keeping up with your kids; helping your kids understand your condition; and being mindful of your own body image and how your children perceive that. In honor of Mother’s Day, Pattie, Amy and Amanda share what they’ve learned from living with these diseases and offer advice to other parents.

According to the International Breast Cancer Paddlers’ Commission, the sport originated 2,000 years ago in China. A team of 20 paddlers, each with one oar – plus a steersperson and a drummer to keep everyone in sync – race in an authentic 46-foot long Hong Kong style dragon boat.

No Excuses: My Journey with Lymphedema

When Amanda Sobey was diagnosed with Lymphedema, there was limited information available about treatment and the resources suggested to help maintain her condition were expensive and did not provide a viable solution for her. Initially, Amanda was traumatized and thought there was nothing she could do about the increased swelling in her right leg; but through perseverance, education and medical compression therapy Amanda found a way.
